Lions Must Pounce Immediately on Dolphins Trade After GM Firing

Trading for the veteran would make sense for Detroit for several reasons.

The Detroit Lions have one clear target after the Miami Dolphins made the surprise move of parting ways with their GM. It appears that this is the first step in a full rebuild, or at the very least makes it more likely that veteran and expiring pieces are dealt away.

For the Lions, this opens the door to improving the pass rush by bringing in veteran Matthew Judon. It was only two seasons ago that the pass rusher appeared to be one of the better options in the game. In the 2022 season, Judon finished with 15.5 sacks and appeared to be on his way to establishing himself as a star.

However, injuries derailed 2023 and ended his time with the Patriots. In the two years since, the pass rusher has managed only 5.5 sacks with the Falcons and Dolphins. Despite this frustrating lack of production, the Lions should have a level of interest in bringing in a player who is playing far below his proven ceiling. Detroit's defensive line is going to elevate Judon and give him a chance to return to the player he had previously been. Making it clear that a trade for the former Patriot is a perfect low-risk, high upside move.

Lions Must Take Advantage of Miami by Bringing In a Veteran Pass Rusher

Former GM Chris Grier's firing appeared to send a message that the Dolphins were open for business. Even if the franchise doesn't complete a major sell-off off there is every reason to believe that Judon will be moved. There simply isn't a reason to retain an expiring contract of an underperforming player. A day three pick should be more than enough to get the deal done for a rental and allow the Lions to keep their options open.

Adding Judon isn't about believing you've found an incredible answer, but opening the door to the possibility of surprise production while maintaining control of your top assets. It's very much on the table that we see Detroit make multiple moves in an attempt to make a Super Bowl push.

After last year's frustrating injuries and surprise first-round exit, there is every reason to go out and be incredibly active ahead of this year's trade deadline. Miami is the perfect trade partner in the fact that the Lions pose zero threat to the Dolphins. There is no need for concern about what players are sent to the NFC contender. Setting up what should be a simple trade for Judon that gives the Lions a chance to find a surprise contributor and Judon a much-needed fresh start.
