The Detroit Lions are preparing for what should be an eventful offseason, clearly needing to bolster the roster in order to avoid another unfortunate playoff result. Following the departures of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, ensuring that free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft go well is paramount.

Superstar defender Aidan Hutchinson missed most of last season due to an injury and getting him back will obviously provide a huge boost. There are weaknesses on the defense that must be addressed though, as Hutchinson can't do everything alone.

While the Lions missed out on Maxx Crosby, one new edge rusher is suddenly available who could be a perfect fit alongside the Lions' defensive leader.

Lions Must Pursue DE Joey Bosa After Chargers Released Him

The Los Angeles Chargers officially informed five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa that they were releasing him. A nine-year veteran, Bosa had spent his entire career with the Chargers. He was the very last player to have ever been a San Diego Charger, so his release marks the end of an era.

He's got a lengthy injury history, having played in only 28 games over the last three seasons combined, though he's still productive when healthy. Bosa notched five sacks and 13 QB hits in 14 games last year en route to Pro Bowl honors, accumulating 19 pressures in the process.

It's worth pointing out that Bosa will be 30 years old by the time next season starts. With his history of injury and age, he's not a slam-dunk target. From an upside perspective though, Bosa could be the missing link on the defensive line.

We saw the Philadelphia Eagles build the trenches and it paid off with a dominant Super Bowl victory. The Lions have done a tremendous job building the offensive line but now it's time to do the same on the other side of the ball.

Perhaps most importantly, acquiring Bosa would prevent a rival like the San Francisco 49ers or even the Eagles from getting him. It's an arms race in the NFC and Detroit needs to be prepared.
