The Detroit Lions made an intriguing free agent signing to bolster the secondary on Thursday that could spell doom for Avonte Maddox. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Lions are signing versatile defensive back Christian Izien to a one-year deal. Izien, who is a former UDFA, spent the last three years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is younger than Maddox.
Meanwhile, Maddox was signed to a one-year deal last offseason and became a fan favorite after stepping in at safety for the Lions due to injuries, providing some stability.Â
The hope was that he would be one of the early re-signings for the Lions in the secondary, but it hasn’t been the case. To this point, Detroit has only brought back Rock Ya-Sin on a one-year, $4 million deal. However, with Izien now inked to a one-year deal, as well, the Lions might not feel the need to bring back Maddox.
Christian Izien’s Signing Could Spell Bad News for Avonte Maddox’s Return
The 30-year-old Maddox had predominantly played in the slot for most of his NFL career. However, he was asked to take some snaps at safety and did not skip a beat when the Lions were banged up with injuries to Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, and, to a lesser extent, Thomas Harper.
In 14 games, Maddox had 32 combined tackles, four pass deflections, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble. He also played well in pass coverage when asked to start between Weeks 15-18 once Branch was placed on injured reserve. Maddox gave up six completions (10 targets) for 92 yards and one touchdown, but allowed an 84.2 passer rating.
As for Izien, he saw his role change drastically this past season with the Buccaneers. In 2024, Izien started in 10 games, playing 308 snaps at free safety, followed by 205 in the slot. However, in 2025, he only made one start despite playing in 14 games.
Izien’s performance in pass coverage and stopping the run left much to be desired. According to Pro Football Focus, he had a 50.4 coverage grade, the lowest of his career, and a 61.2 run defense grade, also a career-low. But Izien’s tackling was graded out at 65.5, which is impressive as he’s credited with 30 missed tackles over three seasons.
Izien’s PFF grades don’t paint a perfect picture, but his versatility in the secondary is something that the Lions clearly value in their defense. At 25 years old, there’s still more room to grow, and Detroit is banking on Izien being a contributor in 2026.Â
Maddox doesn’t have that upside anymore as he’ll be 30 years old when the season kicks off in September. That being said, he can be serviceable and effective in the right system, as we saw this past season with the Lions. We’ll be keeping an eye on where Maddox lands next and if the Lions will make any more additions to the secondary.
