Lions on the Verge of Losing a Third Key Coach
By Jovan Alford
After falling to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round, the Detroit Lions will likely lose both coordinators to head coaching opportunities in the coming days. Detroit already saw offensive coordinator Ben Johnson take the head coaching gig with the Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is on the verge of becoming a head coach.
Any time you lose one, let alone two coordinators, the staff will undergo numerous changes to fill those roles. However, the Lions might be on the verge of losing a third coach, which would not be ideal for Dan Campbell heading into 2025.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Detroit offensive line coach Hank Fraley is scheduled to interview in person on Tuesday with the Seattle Seahawks for their offensive coordinator. It’s Fraley’s second interview with the Seahawks, which means there’s some interest from Seattle.
The 47-year-old Fraley hasn’t received many offensive coordinator interviews, except with the Seahawks. Fraley has coached the Lions’ offensive line for the last five years and has helped this unit become one of the best in the league.
Coincidentally, Fraley was an established starter in the NFL as a center, playing 10 years in the league with the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, and St. Louis Rams.
In addition to coaching Detroit’s offensive line, Fraley also helped the Lions with their rushing attack. Detroit has had one of the best running games over the last two seasons, making it no surprise why Seattle is interested in him. This season, the Lions were ranked sixth in rushing, averaging 146.4 yards per game.
Nonetheless, Lions fans would love to see Fraley stay in the Motor City and potentially become the next offensive coordinator with Johnson now in Chicago.
However, Detroit hasn’t announced a vacancy yet at OC, and other coaches on Campbell’s staff could be due for a promotion. Therefore, it would not be surprising to see Fraley bolt to Seattle if he’s now getting a second interview, which means Campbell has to find a new OL coach, plus two coordinators.
