Things are already looking up.

The Detroit Lions have taken the field as the 2026 training camp is officially underway. With each passing day, we will get a better sense of how the team is looking, what it needs, and what the 53-man roster will look like. We will also get a ton of injury updates, some positive and, unfortunately, some negative.

On Day 1 of training camp, besides the absence of Jahmyr Gibbs due to contract talks, it was mostly positive.

Lions fans had gotten a minor scare earlier in the week when Christian Izien landed on the non-football illness list and Christian Mahogany on the non-football injury list. It turns out neither player is dealing with a serious issue.

Christian Mahogany & Christian Izien are both expected back this week

On Wednesday, head coach Dan Campbell gave a detailed injury update on several players dealing with ailments. He clarified that Izien is only dealing with the flu and that the veteran safety will likely be available on Friday, per The Athletic's Colton Pouncy.

The update was less clear, but still positive for Mahogany. Campbell refused to say what the offensive lineman is dealing with, but revealed that he will be ready in "a couple of days."

This is an excellent sign, not only for both players, but also for the Lions. Mahogany is the frontrunner to start at left guard in Week 1. But his place as a starter is not guaranteed, so he can't afford to miss time in training camp. Juice Scruggs and Ben Bartch are ready to jump on the first opportunity to land the starting LG role.

Izien has a similarly important role. Amid the injuries to Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, Izien is expected to start in Week 1, likely alongside Chuck Clark. Depending on when Branch and Joseph return, the 26-year-old defensive back could be a key starter for a large portion of the Lions' season. The fact that he is only dealing with the flu and will not miss a ton of time is a good sign for his outlook to start the season.

Right now, it doesn't sound like either player is going to be on the NFI list for much longer. Any player who is on the list after training camp must sit out the first four games of the season. That would be a huge hit to both Izien and Mahogany's prospects, but luckily, that is not a real danger at the moment.
