The Detroit Lions are going through their last couple of practices before Week 1 starts but that doesn't stop them from making some additions to their roster.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on Wednesday night that the Lions are expected to add QB C.J. Beathard to the practice squad following a successful workout.

This move comes after the Lions brought in Beathard and Nathan Peterman for a workout, and it's clear that the Iowa product was the better of the two. But in the grand scheme of things, this shows how bleak the QB market is.

Lions Additon of C.J. Beathard Shows How Scare QB Market Is

The Lions only had Jared Goff and Kyle Allen on their active roster and practice squad, so the need for QB3 was needed. While the hope is that Beathard never touches the field, the options that were available weren't good.

Jeff Driskel and Jake Fromm were some other choices out there, but neither of them is better than Beathard.

The 31-year-old has spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars. At those locations, he has 32 games and 13 starts under his belt. In those outings, he was 340-of-563 (60.4%) for 3,886 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Beathard is also 3-10 as a starter.

These numbers aren't anything to praise about, but at this portion of the offseason, there aren't many quality QBs on the open market. They've been claimed, signed, or traded for at point.

It was just last week when the Lions released Hendon Hooker last week after two seasons with the team. He landed with the Panthers but took a jab at his old team. He stated he's happy to be somewhere where he's wanted, implying the Lions were no longer thrilled to have him around.

While there's no idea if that the truth, his departure is the reason why the Lions were in need of another signal caller. If Beathard ever steps on the field for Detroit in 2025, it means something went terribly gone. Nonetheless, they needed to add another arm to the QB room, and they believed that he was their best bet.

And they made the addition a couple of days before the season kicks off.
