One of the more interesting camp stories for the Detroit Lions is how the team manages the backup quarterback role moving forward. Jared Goff has been incredibly durable, and the team has every reason for confidence in their underrated starter.

However, it is still important to prepare for life without Goff. This is where the Lions are currently as they evaluate the position.

While Hendon Hooker should be the decided favorite in the race to win the role, it is far from a done deal. On Tuesday, quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell made it clear that the second option behind Goff is still wide open, though he pointed out Hooker has started the competition off well.

Hendon Hooker is Far from Being Locked into Detroit's Backup Quarterback Role

This summer it is Hooker vs. Kyle Allen for the backup role. Neither player has noteworthy starting experience and they may only have the ceilings of a low-end backup. Still, Hooker should be the favorite based on the physical tools the quarterback brings.

It is interesting to consider whether or not the Lions could look at possible upgrades. Carson Wentz is the one notable name that Lions fans could feel confident in for a spot start or two. Wentz is well-suited to run the same style of offense that Goff has thrived within.

If the team is going to move forward with their current options it should be the former Volunteer winning the role. Allen isn't going to be capable of putting a team on his back and winning a game in relief; he's simply going to go out and attempt not to scratch the car.

While Hooker could be a bigger mess, the quarterback comes with likely far higher upside as well. There is a reason why the Lions were willing to invest a third-round pick in him and it suggests he isn't going into the season as the team's third option.

Hooker may not be the team's official backup just yet, but barring a surprise signing, this is the only way that it is going to end.
