The Detroit Lions have one more preseason game left on the schedule, as they play the Houston Texans on Aug. 23.
There will be multiple players fighting to make the roster, but not everyone is going to make the cut. The WR room in Detroit has a lot of playmakers fighting for their spots, but after the preseason finale, the Lions will be parting ways with Jakobie Keeney-James.
Lions Will Cut Akobie Keeney-James After the Preseason Ends
The Lions have Amon-Ra St. Brown, Tim Patrick, Kalif Raymond, Isaac TeSlaa, and Jameson Williams, who are locks to make the roster. There isn't a lot of room to make the roster behind these guys.
That leaves Malik Taylor, Dominic Lovett, Tom Kennedy, Ronnie Bell, Jackson Meeks, and Keeney-James as the remaining players fighting for two spots max.
Keeney-James signed as an undrafted free agent with the Lions in May but has been quiet this preseason. Despite playing in all three preseason games and logging 52 total snaps, he hasn't recorded a single catch. Per PFF, he has also finished with a 55 or fewer overall grade in each game.
He also fumbled in the Hall of Game against the Chargers to kick off the summer. While he's stuck around for the next three weeks, he hasn't done anything that makes him stand out.
The combination of putting the football on the ground and not stepping up as a pass-catcher creates a pathway for him to be let go. Fellow rookie receivers Lovett and Meeks have already outproduced him.
Meeks is leading the NFL in receiving yards (176) and touchdowns (2) this preseason, while being tied for third in catches (11). As for Lovett, he has seven catches for 45 receiving yards.
Both of these receivers have shown more than Keeney-James has as a playmaker. When you're fighting to make the roster, every rep and preseason game matters. The UMass product was given a shot to latch on to the Lions team, but his performance this summer hasn't warranted a spot on the final roster.
