The Detroit Lions are coming down the final stretch toward the 2025 NFL Draft and they’ll look to add several players to a team that has been on the cusp of the Super Bowl the past two seasons. Everyone is waiting for the Lions to make a big move to add to their roster whether they plan on using the 28th overall pick on a player or to acquire an established veteran that would put them over the top.
Either way, a shake up is coming and it could have a big impact on the upcoming season. Although they’ll make plenty of moves over the weekend, the Lions couldn’t wait and made a big change to their quarterback room by cutting a veteran on the eve of the draft.
Lions Cut QB Jake Fromm Right Before NFL Draft
The Lions announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have released quarterback Jake Fromm. From spent last season on the Lions practice squad but hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2021 season as a member of the New York Giants.

Fromm was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2020 draft but was firmly behind reigning MVP Josh Allen. The 26-year-old was released by the Bills and signed to their practice squad in advance of the 2021 season but was signed by the New York Giants and made his first career start that December.
The Georgia product hasn’t been seen since as he spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons mostly on the Washington Commanders practice squad before joining the Lions practice squad last August.
Fromm’s release leaves the Lions with Jared Goff as the starter but an uncertain plan behind them. Hendon Hooker was a third-round pick by Detroit in the 2023 draft but seems to lost the confidence of general manager Brad Holmes. Kyle Allen also signed with the Lions in free agency but Detroit could look to add a quarterback in the later rounds of the draft or bring in a signal caller during the UDFA period to add depth for training camp.
