Lions Share Notable Jared Goff News on Monday After Playoff Loss
By Jovan Alford
The Detroit Lions shockingly had their playoff run abruptly end on Saturday night, losing 45-31 to Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs. The No. 1 seed Lions were viewed as overwhelming favorites to win the game, but the defense couldn’t get key stops and quarterback Jared Goff struggled.
The veteran QB completed 23-of-40 passes for 313 yards, a touchdown, three interceptions, and had a fumble. The last time Goff had four or more turnovers in a game was in Week 10 against the Houston Texans (5 interceptions).
The Lions pulled that game out with a 26-23 win but didn’t have the same luck on Saturday night. The Commanders' defense made life uncomfortable for Goff and the passing game, despite giving up a ton of yards to second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
In addition to the turnovers, Washington's defense sacked Goff twice and levied seven quarterback hits.
Detroit fans were concerned about Goff’s health in the second quarter after he threw his first interception, which was returned for a touchdown by Commanders safety Quan Martin.
The veteran quarterback was lit up by a vicious hit from Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu, which caused Goff to miss a few snaps on Detroit’s next offensive drive. Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater stepped in for Goff, while he was getting looked at.
Thankfully, Goff was okay to return, but when the hit initially happened it did not look good for the starting quarterback.
On Monday, Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network reported that the veteran QB was not in the concussion protocol after Saturday’s game.
You can understand why that narrative/rumor was floating out as the veteran quarterback had to leave the game. However, the fact that Goff wasn’t in the protocol and finished the game was good, even if it wasn’t the result Lions fans wanted on the scoreboard.
After failing to meet and live up to expectations this season, it will be interesting to see where Goff and the Lions go from here as there could be a lot of changes on the coaching staff in the offseason.
