The Detroit Lions are in desperate need of more help in the secondary. Heading into a crucial clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, the Lions are depleted in the defensive backfield due to injuries and Brian Branch's suspension. Fortunately, their bye week is right around the corner, giving them a chance to regroup, rest, and get healthy. The Lions' primary objective needs to be entering the bye week without suffering any more injuries. As long as they can do that, they can avoid making a panic move to address their concerns.
One of those panic moves would be signing CJ Gardner-Johnson. The former Lions defender just wore out his welcome with yet another team and was just released by the Baltimore Ravens after only one week. While it was reported that it was an amicable mutual decision between the Ravens and CJGJ, it's not a good sign for a player with his track record to be released twice in the span of three weeks.
Lions Can't Be Tempted by CJ Gardner-Johnson's Release
The idea of Detroit bringing him back could be tempting in theory. The 27-year-old had a short-lived span with the Lions in the 2023 season. He ended up spending most of the regular season before returning towards the end of the season and playing in all three postseason games. Even though he struggled in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, Gardner-Johnson was generally solid in his year with the Lions. That is how he was able to land a three-year, $27 million deal with the Eagles that offseason.
The Lions could certainly use more veteran competence and proven depth in the secondary. CJGJ can line up at safety, at nickel corner, or even on the outside if needed. That sort of versatility could come in handy for the Lions while they are dealing with injuries.
Yet, that is a risk Dan Campbell and the Lions shouldn't be willing to take. The Lions have an impeccable locker room and team chemistry, and bringing a questionable figure like Gardner-Johnson, no matter his familiarity with the organization, is not worth it.
Plus, ESPN's Eric Woodyard just reported that Avonte Maddox and Terrion Arnold are set to return in Week 9 following the Lions' bye. Maddox has spent time at safety this season, and Branch will be back from his suspension, not leaving much room for CJGJ in the rotation.
Detroit will have its secondary depth back after one more game, making the Gardner-Johnson risk not worth it.
