Ever since the Carolina Panthers released veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday, speculations about his next team started to dominate the NFL airwaves. Lions fans were not alone in wanting their team to pursue the three-time Pro Bowler.

At the same time, not all Lions fans were on board with the idea of signing Clowney. While there is consensus about Detroit's need to improve its pass rush, some fans are worried about the financial aspect of a deal and the culture fit. Especially considering the potential of Za'Darius Smith returning to Detroit, one has to wonder if adding Clowney makes sense.

Even if Za'Darius Smith is not going to return to Motown, the Lions may still have a better option out there than Clowney. Matthew Judon, one of the best remaining pass rushers in free agency, would be a better option than Clowney.

Lions Should Sign Matthew Judon Instead of Jadeveon Clowney

Despite remaining an effective defender late into his career, Clowney has continued to be a journeyman. Ever since his Texans tenure, Clowney has worn out his welcome in multiple stops. The Panthers were the 32-year-old's fifth team in six seasons. He had a notably high-profile exit from Cleveland after he criticized the Browns for his role.

Considering that no team in the NFL prioritizes culture more than Dan Campbell and the Lions, whether Clowney would be an ideal fit remains a question.

Even though Clowney had a much better season last year, Matt Judon may be the right choice for the Lions. The former Ravens and Patriots leader had a disappointing 2024 campaign after getting traded to the Falcons before the season. He still managed to record 5.5 sacks, 9 QB hits, and seven tackles for loss. He would also likely be on a more team-friendly deal. Detroit should seriously consider pursuing Judon instead.
