One area the Detroit Lions were noticeably lacking during the 2025 season, after the departure of former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, was creativity in play-calling. There was a lack of fun that had previously defined one of the league's more entertaining offenses. With this in mind, the Lions should consider signing one of the more unique offensive weapons still available on the open market now that the 2026 draft has come and gone.

Former New Orleans Saints utility player and backup quarterback Taysom Hill remains a free agent, and that's great news for Detroit. Hill was utilized best by Sean Payton's New Orleans teams, where he would line up all over the field as a weapon that couldn't be predicted. Whether it is running a quarterback sneak or lining up at tight end, Hill provides any team he's on with a unique weapon that can push opposing defenses off balance. It is the exact final touch that would fit Detroit's draft class and help complete the offensive retool.

Jared Goff isn't known as a rushing threat, and at this stage of his career, it's safe to say he never will be. Adding Hill gives you an option for short-yardage situations or specific packages. Adding to the fit is that both Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright are returning from injuries, with little depth behind them.

Signing the former Saint gives you a viable option at tight end and takes a bit of pressure off the returning pieces. For Hill, it would make sense to attempt to rebuild value with one of the NFC's most talented offenses, handing the veteran a chance to cash in on free agency one last time in the 2027 offseason.

Lions Should Think Outside the Box with Post-Draft Signing Adding Taysom Hill

Another piece of this that makes the potential signing a fit is that you only have Teddy Bridgewater as a viable backup on the roster. After Bridgewater, the Lions signed undrafted free agent Luke Altmyer as a potential emergency option. Hill has experience at quarterback and gives you a third option if Altmyer doesn't pan out as hoped.

Plain and simple, there is simply no downside to adding a flexible weapon that can be signed for a bargain at this point in the offseason. It makes sense for the Lions and gives the offense a chance to employ a level of creativity that was lacking a season ago.

There is also some physicality missing from the fray, following David Montgomery's trade to the Houston Texans, creating a clear concern in this area. Hill can help fill this gap alongside veteran FA signing Isiah Pacheco, helping fill the lost production from Montgomery.

It makes sense for both sides and would be a fun wrinkle for Dan Campbell's team to have heading into the 2026 season. No question, if there is one team that can breathe life back into Hill's career and get the most out of the utility option, it is the Lions.
