The Detroit Lions continue to make moves. Clearly, they're still not entirely sold on their current tight end room. Of course, they're still extremely high on Sam LaPorta (as they should be), but there's not much to work with after him.
Considering that, and with all the doubts surrounding Tyler Conklin, Dan Campbell's team has turned its sights back to another familiar face. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, they brought back Anthony Firkser, who was released by the Washington Commanders earlier in the week.
This isn't Firkser's first stint with the organization. He spent time with the Lions in 2023 and 2025, and he hauled in eight receptions for 53 yards last season, making seven appearances. He has also spent time with the Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, and New York Jets.

Firkser isn't a big name by any means, but the fact that he's more than familiar with Coach Campbell and the organization should give him a clear path to make the roster. The Lions moved on from Zach Horton in a corresponding move, all but taking another competitor out of the equation.
All in all, Firkser has amassed 123 receptions for 1,260 yards and five touchdowns in 85 career games, entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Harvard back in 2017. He's spent extensive time on practice squads, but he brings another veteran body to the table as he competes for playing time.
As things stand now, Brock Wright should be the primary candidate to take the TE2 role. Conklin, on the other hand, began training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with a calf injury. Soft-tissue ailments tend to linger, so even though he still has more than enough time to get back on the field, he's missing crucial reps to get a hold of the new offense.
To add another layer of trouble for Conklin, the Lions also seem to be high on Jackson Meeks, with even veteran players taking to social media to advocate for him making the roster. He's listed as a wide receiver but has also worked out at tight end.
The Lions signed Drew Petzing as their new offensive coordinator to fix their offense, and given his experience with guys like Trey McBride, LaPorta might be a focal part of the passing game. Also, they may use more 12 and 13 personnel, so it makes sense that they want to get things right at the position.
Iron sharpens iron, and the competition for one final roster spot will be a storyline to follow closely in Detroit.
