The Detroit Lions have the same core of players on offense returning for the 2025 season. They had Ben Johnson head to the Chicago Bears and replaced him with John Morton.
Naturally, there are going to be questions on whether the offense can keep up the same production going forward, but there is no doubt inside the building. On Thursday, Penei Sewell was speaking with the media and said, "We haven't skipped a beat," when speaking about Morton.
Penei Sewell Gave John Morton a Vote of Confidence
Earlier this month, Morton said he wasn't going to make many changes to the offense. Instead, he will be making subtle tweaks.
I mean, if something isn't broken, why change it?
We all know that with Johnson no longer calling the plays, things will be different, but it doesn't mean the scheme will change. It sounds like the Lions will be running similar concepts and putting these players in positions where they have excelled.
Detroit had one of the most explosive offenses in the league in 2024. They ranked second in total offense (409.5) and passing offense (263.2) while being sixth in running offense (146.4). The Lions were also first in points per game (33.2).
The last time Morton was an offensive coordinator came in 2017 with the New York Jets. Since leaving the Big Apple, the 55-year-old was a senior offensive assistant with the Las Vegas Raiders (2019-2021) and Lions in 2022. From 2023 to 2024, Morton became the pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos and is now back in the Motor City.
He's been around football for a long time and understands that when something is working, it's for a reason. The Lions offense is the prime example of that, and he knows it doesn't need much tweaking. That plays a part in why Sewell feels they haven't missed a beat.
They will continue to use the next couple of months to fine-tune things, but it sounds like everyone is expecting this unit to be one of the best offenses once again in 2025.
