The Detroit Lions have put the disappointing end to the 2024 season behind them and now have their eyes on 2025. The Lions have the fifth-best odds to win the Super Bowl next season at +1000 according to DraftKings Sportsbook and will begin that quest against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 7.
But before the season begins, the Lions have to start with the basics at OTAs. While the second wave of workouts has begun, one Lions star found time to receive one more honor before he gets back to work and attempts to get Detroit to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
Lions RB David Montgomery Receives His Degree From Iowa State
David Montgomery has been busy since the Lions' season ended as he worked to earn his degree from his alma mater, Iowa State. The former Cyclone officially received his degree on Friday, and it was a goal he set once he declared for the NFL Draft after his junior season in Ames.
“Getting my Iowa State degree was the most important thing I had on my list,” Montgomery said via the school’s “Forever True” blog. “I set a goal I wanted to finish this in the next couple of years, so being able to do that was very important. This was a priority for me. When I got a full-ride scholarship, I made a promise to ensure myself to finish. Full-ride scholarships aren’t easy to come by, and I wanted to make sure I was exhausting every opportunity to ensure I would graduate.”
On top of being a graduate, Montgomery was a Cyclone legend during his three-year collegiate career. He ranks seventh all-time with 2,925 rushing yards and 10th with 26 touchdowns and helped Matt Campbell turn the program around after inheriting a 3-8 team under Paul Rhodes in 2016. He became one of the top running back prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft after leaving school and was selected in the third round (73rd overall) by the Chicago Bears.
Montgomery had a solid start with the Bears, running for over 800 yards and five touchdowns in each of his four seasons in Chicago. But he has hit another gear with the Lions, running for 1,790 yards and 25 touchdowns in his first two seasons with Detroit.
The soon-to-be 28-year-old has checked off plenty of boxes already in his career. But with his degree in hand, Montgomery will aim to cross “Super Bowl Champion” off his list this upcoming season.
