Over the past few seasons, the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers have developed one of the NFL’s biggest rivalries. After San Francisco eliminated Detroit in the NFC Championship Game two years ago, Lions fans' hatred for the franchise only grew. That said, the disdain between the two franchises grew this week, when San Francisco re-signed Equanimeous St. Brown, the older brother of Lions star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the San Francisco 49ers brought back Equanimeous St. Brown on Tuesday after previously releasing him at the end of July. The 28-year-old receiver originally signed with the 49ers on July 22 after the team was hit with an injury bug at wide receiver. However, St. Brown was released nine days later when they signed Andy Isabella.

The move made sense at the time, as Isabella offers more as a pass catcher than St. Brown, who is primarily known for his run-blocking ability. Now that Isabella is dealing with an ankle injury, the 49ers have reversed course and brought back St. Brown.

While this kind of roster shuffling isn’t unusual during camp, it’s rare to see a player re-signed so quickly after being let go, especially for a player like St. Brown, who isn't a huge factor in the receiving game.

In six seasons, the 28-year-old has recorded 63 receptions, 110 targets for 928 yards and two touchdowns. At 6'5' 214 pounds, Equanimeous has made more of a name for himself as a blocker in the NFL. In four of six seasons, he has recorded a run blocking grade of 57.0 or higher, according to PFF.

While St. Brown isn't very effective as a pass catcher, his run-blocking ability fits Kyle Shanahan's offense well. Still, the veteran has a long way to go to make the 49ers roster. To make the initial 53-man roster, he will need to beat out Jacob Cowing or Jordan Watkins for the sixth receiver spot.

Although most Lions fans despise the 49ers, they want nothing but the best for Equanimeous. His younger brother looks to lead the Lions' receiving corps and offense to a Super Bowl victory.
