The Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens wrap up the Week 3 slate of games when they battle on Monday Night Football. Whether they beat or lose to the Ravens, the Lions still have room for improvement, including when it comes to their pass rush. Having said that, they'll be facing some competition if they want to upgrade the unit.
On Monday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa tore his ACL, and he will be done for the year. With their star edge rusher out, the 49ers may look to that market to get better, and that'll be another suitor in the pot that the Lions should be sticking their hand into.
49ers Could Look for EDGE Help After Nick Bosa's Season-Ending Injury
The 49ers are 3-0 despite the injuries to Brock Purdy, George Kittle, and now Bosa. This summer, San Francisco traded for Bryce Huff to bolster their front before drafting Mykel Williams in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. The 49ers have never shied away from improving their pass rush, and that's only emphasized with Robert Saleh returning as their defensive coordinator.
Despite making two additions there, there certainly is a world where the 49ers check in some edge rushers on the trade block around the league before potentially looking at the free agent market.
Through the first two games of the season, Detroit has secured four sacks, with one coming from safety Brian Branch. It's not a stretch to say that the Lions could use another defensive lineman. Marcus Davenport is dealing with a chest injury that's keeping him out of Week 3. Josh Paschal has been on the NFI list, leading to more opportunities for Al-Quadin Muhammad. It's good to see the development of the Miami product, but the Lions are looking to compete for a Super Bowl.
To be one of the best teams when the season turns to January, the Lions must generate pressure. Aidan Hutchinson is the only name upfront that strikes fear into an offense, yet he's less than a year removed from a broken tibia and fibula.
Detroit needs to add more juice sooner rather than later, and with the 49ers on the lookout, general manager Brad Holmes should act quickly. Jadeveon Clowney was the latest one to land a home for 2025, as he signed with the Dallas Cowboys last week.
The available pass-rushing options are dwindling, and the injury to Bosa can have a ripple effect on the Lions as well.
