To say that Terrion Arnold has had a tough start to his second season in the pros would be a massive understatement. The Alabama product has been the opposition's favorite victim in the first three weeks of the season, and he has been exposed over and over.
That's why, after watching the 22-year-old give up 13 receptions on 20 targets for 223 yards and one touchdown, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is finally ready to make some adjustments to the secondary.
Lions Will Use Amik Robertson More Often
When asked about Arnold's struggles, Campbell claimed that he still had confidence in him. However, as much as he knows there will be some growing pains, he also revealed that they might have no choice but to play Robertson:
"What we ask of these corners is not easy, but it’s also why you’re here. It’s why we acquire you, whether it’s the draft or it’s free agency, because we’re going to put you on an island. And it’s not going to be easy, but that’s the task you’re given. He’s a young player, he’s working at it, and he’s going to get better, alright?" Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket. "And look, we’ll probably use Amik (Robertson) on stuff too. Amik’s a good player. So we’re going to mix it up a little bit.”
Arnold has also been on the wrong end of multiple defensive pass interference calls, and that type of slow start can get to a player's head. Some need more time to get it together, and the talent is clearly there, so the Lions are doing the right thing by slowing things down a little.
He flashed glimpses of strong play in his rookie season, and he was much better in the second half against the Chicago Bears, giving up just one catch for 11 yards on three targets. He just needs to gain his confidence back, and sometimes, taking a step back can help take a couple of steps forward.
Robertson is more experienced, and he's already shown that he can hold his ground on the outside. He even closed out last season as the starter for the final three games, and he had a strong outing against Justin Jefferson.
The Lions will face the Cleveland Browns' struggling passing game at home on Sunday, and that could be the perfect game for Arnold to get his confidence back. After giving up 26.0 points per game, they definitely need a break.
