When it comes to the Detroit Lions' starting weapons, there is zero reason for concern. Veteran quarterback Jared Goff has consistently shown an ability to elevate the team's current weapons. Add in the talent of Amon-Ra St. Brown as the primary receiver, and Detroit's offense is in a great spot even with the loss of coordinator Ben Johnson. If there was one remaining concern, it would be depth at the receiver position.

This is something receiver Dominic Lovett is giving reason to believe could quickly change. Lovett was a draft afterthought not being one of Georgia's top prospects. However, the advantage Lovett brings is having played in so many high-leverage games in a program known for their ability to prepare players for the next level. This appears to be the case in the early going for the Lions receiver, who has made an instant impression.

Dominic Lovett Could Become a Surprise Depth Option in a Loaded Detroit Offense

This isn't to suggest the 7th-round selection is a threat to take reps from any of Detroit's current starters. Rather, Lovett could quickly work his way into a surprise depth role that the team so obviously lacks.

Lovett's ability to run a complete route tree was quickly noted in the team's rookie minicamp. The Georgia product does all of the little things at a high level. This is exactly what must happen for a player who doesn't have overwhelming physical traits that cement a role at his position. Still, Lions fans should be keeping a close eye on Lovett as the receiver attempts to continue his early impression and carve out a depth role on Detroit's depth chart.

Even with the loss of coordinators, the Lions have every reason to believe the 2025 season is finally their year. After an injury-plagued 2024 season doomed what was the early NFC favorites. While it is far from an easy road, the Lions have all of the needed pieces to find that first elusive Super Bowl. Perhaps that includes Lovett, who could quickly find himself in a surprise depth role heading into next season.
