The 2024 season marked year four in the post-Matthew Stafford era for the Detroit Lions. Detroit sent Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Goff, two first-round picks (2022 & 2023), and a third-round pick (2021) during the 2021 offseason. Since then, both teams have had successful seasons.
The Rams won Super Bowl 56 in 2022, thanks to Stafford and a high-powered offense. The Lions have had their two best seasons in franchise history with Goff as quarterback in the past two seasons. Even though Detroit fell short of their goal in 2024, Goff has still outperformed what many thought the Lions would get from him.
Nonetheless, it seems that Stafford's time in Los Angeles could end as soon as this offseason. With the impending trade of Cooper Kupp, it sounds like Stafford wants out, and a surprise NFC team may have made a move that could convince Stafford to request a trade to that franchise.
Matthew Stafford Could be a New York Giant in 2025
Giants are hiring former Jaguars and Bills WR coach Chad Hall as their assistant quarterbacks coach, per source. Hall now reunites with his former Bills colleagues, HC Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen, in New York. Hall also is the brother-in-law of current Rams QB Matthew…

According to Adam Schefter, on Monday, the New York Giants hired Chad Hall, Stafford's brother-in-law, as their assistant quarterbacks coach. To be clear, Hall's hiring was most likely not done with the intention of luring Stafford to New York. As Schefter mentions, Hall has connections with head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen from his time as the Buffalo Bills wide receivers coach.
However, his relationship with Stafford was certainly a plus for the Giants. New York must find a quarterback to save Daboll and Schoen's jobs. Although many expect them to draft a quarterback at No. 3 this year, they could decide to trade for Stafford in the hope he plays for 2-3 more seasons.
Before Hall was hired, selling a Giants tenure to Stafford wouldn't have been easy. Yet, now that Hall is on the Giants' staff, Stafford's wife, Kelly, will certainly have a conversation with him about it.
Though Stafford to New York is still a pipe dream, it's more realistic now than it was even two days ago. Wherever Stafford ends up, Lions fans will still be cheering for him in 2025 as long as he isn't playing for Detroit.
