Packers Stud Looks Like He Won't Be a Lions Concern Much Longer

That would be one less threat for Detroit to worry about.

The Detroit Lions' offseason is still young, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been busy. Between some coaching staff changes and player-related drama, there hasn't been a dull minute so far in the Motor City. The action will buzz even louder when NFL free agency begins, starting with the tampering period on Monday, March 9.

Every team has players hitting the open market, but seeing who your rival could lose is also interesting, especially in the jam-packed NFC North. The Green Bay Packers have multiple starters becoming free agents, and not everyone will return.

Although nothing is official, it appears that Packers wideout Romeo Doubs will land elsewhere, which would be a massive win for the Lions.

Lions May Not Have to Deal with Packers WR Romeo Doubs After Free Agency Begins

Last offseason, the Packers decided to make some additions to the receiver room via the NFL draft. They nabbed Matthew Golden in the first round, marking the first receiver taken in the first round by Green Bay since 2002. They continued to add to the room, selecting Savion Williams with the 87th overall pick.

The new duo joined Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks as the top six WRs for the Packers going into 2026. Considering they have made investments in that room and have a ton of depth there, it's easy to see why the Lions' NFC North rival might let Doubs walk in free agency instead of giving him a new deal.

Teams around the league are always looking for athletic playmakers, and Doubs fits the bill. He'll turn 26 years old in April and has been a consistent weapon for the Packers. In 59 career games, Doubs has 202 catches for 2,424 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns. He has gone over 600 receiving yards and four-plus touchdowns in three straight seasons.

Despite a ton of mouths to feed in the Packers' WR room, losing a consistent producer like this would be less than ideal for them and music to the ears of Lions fans. In seven career games against Detroit, Doubs had 23 receptions for 266 receiving yards and a touchdown.

While he never torched Detroit, it would be a loss for the Packers to see him sign elsewhere. Watson has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. Golden didn't score as a rookie and wasn't utilized the way many envisioned. That's without mentioning that Reed missed 10 games in 2025 due to a broken collarbone and a Jones fracture in his foot.

The Packers will have to bank on this collection of guys staying healthy and being productive. Meanwhile, Doubs racked up eight catches for 124 receiving yards and a touchdown in the wild-card loss to the Bears. And his price on the open market could have gone up due to it. Spotrac projects that Doubs will get a four-year, $48 million deal in free agency.

Green Bay may not have funds to retain Doubs, allowing him to join another team. For a Lions group looking to make the postseason again in 2026, seeing a rival lose a quality playmaker would be fantastic news, giving those around the Motor City another offseason development to look forward to next month.
