Armed with the best record in baseball and a healthy lead in the American League Central, the Detroit Tigers are primed to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. The Tigers are hungry after getting their first taste of the postseason in 10 years last season and an additional move could help them make their first American League Championship Series since 2013.

One of the moves that could make an impact is adding a right-handed bat. The Tigers have plenty of options available, but one trade target became an even hotter name with some injury news on Monday night.

Tigers Trade Target Eugenio Suarez More Likely to Be Traded After Corbin Carroll Injury

The news came when the Arizona Diamondbacks announced that outfielder Corbin Carroll will be placed on the injured list with a chip fracture in his left wrist. The injury occurred when Carroll was hit by a reliever Justin Bruihl in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on June 18 but Arizona manager Torey Lovullo confirmed on Monday that the 24-year-old will be placed on the injured list after undergoing an MRI on Monday.

The injury comes at a rough time for the Diamondbacks. Carroll was hitting .255/.341/.573 with 20 homers in 72 games for Arizona and was second on the team behind shortstop Ketel Marte (2.9) with 2.7 wins above replacement. The Diamondbacks are also in the middle of the National League Wild Card race, sitting 2.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers entering Tuesday.

With ace Corbin Burnes, top relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez, and starting catcher Gabriel Moreno all on the shelf, the Diamondbacks are likely to slide down the standings after Monday’s news. That could be good news for teams like the Tigers, however, who may have their eye on third baseman Eugenio Suarez.

Suarez is in the final year of his contract and is hitting like a player who will get paid at the end of the season. The 33-year-old is hitting .251/.323/.569 with 25 homers and a NL-high 67 RBI in 78 games this year and should be attractive to any team looking for a right-handed bat in the middle of their lineup.

The Tigers are a team that should be interested. Detroit has used a combination of Zach McKinstry and Colt Keith at the hot corner this year but Tigers third basemen rank 25th entering Tuesday with a .607 OPS. The Tigers would also like to find another right-handed bat after Trey Sweeney struggled at shortstop (.222/.278/.315, 4 HR, 23 RBI) and Suarez would add another run producer to a lineup that already ranks fifth with 4.95 runs per game this season.

While Carroll’s injury isn’t a direct correlation to whether the Diamondbacks will sell, it’s another step in that direction. It could make Arizona more likely to deal one of their biggest trade chips and benefit the Tigers in their push for a pennant.
