Detroit Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon addressed the fans and the media ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft. Discussing the team's offseason plans, Langdon talked extensively about wanting to get better and making the moves that can help them in that goal. He also revealed what they are intending to do with the No. 21 pick, per Omari Sankofa of The Detroit Free Press.

The most important takeaway in his remarks about the draft was signaling that the team isn't trying to draft for need. Instead, the Pistons are going to select the best player available.

Pistons aren't looking to fill their needs with the No. 21 pick in the Draft

This is a reasonable approach. The Pistons are a deep team. They will make moves this summer to further add to this roster to make a title run. Finding an immediate contributor with the No. 21 pick in the draft is very difficult. Presumably, regardless of who the Pistons draft, they will not be a rotation player right away. So, going for the best prospect with the highest upside makes more sense.

Langdon said that the player they draft doesn't have to help the team next year. Ideally, he would help the Pistons when the team gets really expensive over the next couple of years.

This means that the Pistons won't be specifically looking for shooting and shot creation in the draft, their two most obvious needs. If the best player available at No. 21 can fill those needs, great, but don't expect the Pistons to reach for a player just because they can make shots.

Plus, Langdon sounded pessimistic about the possibility of finding a high-level shooter where they are in the draft. While he acknowledged that the two biggest needs of the team are "shooting and ball-handling," Langdon said finding shooting will be difficult because it's "the most valued commodity in today's league."

He added that the Pistons should be able to add playmaking in this guard-heavy draft. Some playmaker options who may be available for Detroit at No. 21 include Bennett Stirtz, Christian Anderson, Meleek Thomas, and Ebuka Okorie. The Pistons already brought in Anderson and Thomas for pre-draft workouts, but nothing should be ruled out on draft day since Detroit is seemingly keeping its options open.

The best prospect available is the right approach, given where the Pistons are as a franchise. Their problems can't be solved with a late first-round pick. This makes Detroit's activity on the trade market and free agency that much more important.
