Pistons Land Perfect Marksman to Pair With Cade Cunningham in Latest Projected Trade

The Detroit Pistons need to add more shooting and shot creation this offseason. A 30-win improvement from the prior season is nice, but the Pistons still have ways to go before becoming a true threat to win the Eastern Conference. The most obvious way Detroit can take that step forward is by surrounding Cade Cunningham with more offensive talent.

One trade scenario that makes sense for the Pistons would be targeting Grayson Allen of the Phoenix Suns. The 29-year-old shooting guard is one of the best three-point shooters in the league, hitting 44.5% from downtown on 5.7 attempts per game in his two seasons in Phoenix. That type of volume and accuracy would do wonders for the Pistons offense.

A potential trade would include Simone Fontecchio, Marcus Sasser, and this year's 37th-overall pick going to Phoenix in exchange for Allen.

This trade allows the Suns to save significant money by moving off Allen's $16.8 million salary for next season. They also add a young, cheap contributor in Sasser, the expiring contract of Fontecchio, and a rookie on a team-friendly deal with the second-round pick.

Detroit, on the other hand, gets a very good offensive player. Allen certainly has athletic and physical limitations. He can be a defensive liability in certain matchups, but he is not a lost cause, as he has decent size and strength for his position.

Adding Allen would be an insurance policy for the departure of Tim Hardaway Jr. or Malik Beasley. The Pistons would presumably try to retain Beasley, but if he proves to be out of their price range, Allen could easily replace Beasley, if not be an upgrade over him.

Allen is under contract until the end of the 2026-27 season and has a player option for the 2027-28 season. Shooting is a premium asset that ages well, and one can expect Allen to retain his value in his early 30s. The Pistons would be wise to take advantage of Phoenix's dire situation and poach one of their best role players.
