The Detroit Pistons will enter the 2025-26 NBA season in an interesting position in the Eastern Conference. Last year's breakout has left the franchise in the middle of the pack in a conference that is suddenly up for grabs. The Indiana Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton and Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum are both expected to miss this season, ruling out the top two contenders in the East. For the Pistons, this is an unexpected opportunity to find a way not only back into the playoffs but perhaps into making a surprise run.
With this in mind, all options must be on the table, including entertaining the idea of adding another star alongside Cade Cunningham. According to a new report from ESPN, this could be current New Orleans star Zion Williamson. The up-and-down career of the impressive forward has left the franchise little choice but to turn the page, lacking the needed pieces to build around Williams.
Detroit can offer the perfect setup that should allow the star to be at his absolute best. The defensive intensity and pieces are in place to make up for concerns about Williamson's match-ups. Add in the established star presence of Cunningham, and you have the perfect landing spot for Zion when looking at a strictly basketball fit.
Pistons Could Be a Surprise Zion Williamson Landing Spot
However, this is where it is important to point out that Williamson is facing truly alarming accusations off the court. If Detroit is even going to entertain making such a move, the legal concerns must be answered first. If there is even a hint of truth detected, neither the Pistons nor any team in the league should have interest in employing Williamson.
With that said, the Pistons are far too interesting a basketball fit to ignore the potential, dependent on how the off the cour concerns play out. Detroit needs to make a splashy move that fans can put their arms around and give reason to believe they can make a run through a wide-open Eastern Conference.
In 214 career games with the Pelicans, Williamson has averaged 24.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.0 steals, and .589/.327/.689 shooting splits.
Williamson is the obvious target, but not the only option for a franchise that has a wealth of young players and draft picks if the right move presents itself. No question, Pistons fans should feel great about where the franchise is heading and are in a position to further push their chips to the center of the table in the 2025-26 season.
