The Jalen Duren saga has taken up the entire Detroit Pistons offseason. The training camp is in a couple of days, and the Pistons have yet to sign their All-Star center to a new deal.
Nobody thought that the negotiations between the sides would extend all the way to training camp. Since there are no teams with cap space around the league, and the Pistons have the ability to pay Duren more than any other team and match any offer sheet, it was assumed that it would get done.
Now the odds of Duren not signing a new contract with Detroit are higher than ever. October 1 is the deadline for Duren to accept his qualifying offer. This would mean that he would play on a $9.6 million deal for the 2026-27 campaign before hitting unrestricted free agency next offseason. So, we should see some sort of resolution between now and Thursday.
What's the most likely outcome in Jalen Duren-Pistons negotiations?
The recent reporting suggests that the Pistons have increased their offer to five years and $200 million. But Duren is still not convinced. One factor that is reportedly contributing to Duren's hesitation is the weight clause the Pistons put in the offer. The 22-year-old center would have to do weigh-ins on a regular basis to make sure he is meeting the team's weight goals.
For a player who has never been visibly out of shape, this is a strange stipulation from the Pistons. But this is clearly not the only reason why Duren hasn't accepted the offer.
Duren is seemingly feeling frustrated and disrespected by the franchise, and the weight clause is just the final drop. Detroit didn't offer Duren the contract extension he was looking for in the 2025 offseason. He was reportedly asking for $30 million per year, and the Pistons capped their offer in the $20 million per year range.
When he hit restricted free agency this summer, the offers weren't much better. The Pistons began negotiations in the low-30-million range, which is well below market value for a 22-year-old who just made an All-NBA team. Duren was never going to take that offer, regardless of how much leverage he had.
The Pistons underestimated Duren's leverage throughout the process. They wanted to squeeze every dollar out of him to sign him to a team-friendly deal. While this made some business sense, it also risked alienating Duren.
And that is exactly what happened.
But the nature of restricted free agency still gives the Pistons the edge in being able to retain Duren. Even if the star center were to take his qualifying offer and sign the maximum deal elsewhere next season, he would be making less money than he would have if he were to take Detroit's offer now.
Plus, there is the risk of injury that could hurt his chances of getting that max offer next summer, regardless of what teams like the Sacramento Kings may have promised him.
That is why the most likely outcome is still a new contract for Duren. Perhaps the Pistons mend the relationship by increasing their offer even more, with or without the weight clause. At the end of the day, there is nothing stopping Duren from accepting this contract offer and forcing his way out with a trade demand next offseason.
Regardless of how bad the relationship between the two sides is, there is still a mutual benefit to signing a new contract. They both need each other, at least for now, and that is why this will get done over the next couple of days.
