Given how their secondary has performed through the first three games of the season, the Detroit Lions should've been all over Joey Porter Jr. Instead, they watched the Dallas Cowboys make the move their fans urged them to make.
However, disappointing as that may have been, it wasn't necessarily surprising. The Lions were vocal about their reluctance to make any big moves, citing their financial flexibility and confidence in their guys.
Even so, that doesn't mean the Lions can't find help elsewhere. There are still plenty of highly talented trade candidates who might give this secondary a much-needed boost, and we'll rank the three most realistic options from worst to best.
The 3 best cornerbacks the Detroit Lions should try to trade for
3. Greg Newsome II
Greg Newsome II is on a one-year deal, and with the New York Giants tumbling after Jaxson Dart's injury, the former first-round pick might be available at a discount. He has shown flashes, though he has lacked the consistency to live up to the hype.
That said, he's still young, and he might just need a change of scenery to finally step up. The Lions wouldn't even be on the hook for the long run if things don't work out, making him a great low-risk/high-reward pickup for Kelvin Sheppard's defense.
2. Kristian Fulton
Kristian Fulton struggled to stay on the field in his first year with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, with rookie first-round pick Mansoor Delane looking like a star and Nohl Williams also taking a leap in year two, he might have become expendable in the final year of his two-year deal.
Fulton's durability is a question mark, but the production has been there when he's been healthy. The Chiefs have a surplus of young talent at the position, and they'd probably be more than willing to give up Fulton for a conditional mid-round selection.
1. Riley Moss
With Patrick Surtain II and Ja'Quan McMillian locked in, Riley Moss has officially become the odd man out in Denver. The Broncos also took Jahdae Barron in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, so the writing is pretty much on the wall here.
Moss is in the final year of his contract, and while he's been a mainstay in Sean Payton's defense, it's hard to believe they'll go the extra mile to give him big bucks with all the depth they have. He'd immediately become the best player in the Lions' secondary, giving them a long-term option with a contract extension.
