The Detroit Lions are going through an eventful offseason. Following their unexpected loss to the Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs, the Lions saw a mass exodus in their coaching staff. The departures of Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson didn't come as massive shocks to anybody, so Dan Campbell didn't waste too much time finding their replacements.

Kelvin Sheppard was promoted to the defensive coordinator, and John Morton was hired as the offensive coordinator.

One of the potential candidates for the OC vacancy was former Lions quarterback David Blough. In his first season as the assistant quarterbacks coach with the Commanders, Blough has established himself as one of the best up-and-coming coaches on the offensive side of the ball.

Former Lions QB David Blough Suddenly a Hot Name on the Coaching Market

NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported on Wednesday that Blough has interview requests from the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars for their QB coach openings, as well as interest from the Bears for a passing game coordinator role.

Chicago's interest in Blough is especially unsurprising. He knows Ben Johnson's system and offensive scheme, as he played for him in two separate stints. Blough was basically a player-coach in his final season in Detroit in 2023. He was credited with installing plays for the Lions during his tenure there and has been a big part of the Commanders offense since joining the staff there.

The Commanders were the biggest surprise team in the NFL this season and had one of the most explosive offenses in the league. It is certainly understandable for him to have multiple suitors around the league.

Blough is seemingly on track to be an offensive coordinator in the future. It obviously would have been a massive risk for the Lions to bring him as the OC after only one year as an assistant QB coach.

At the same time, losing out on a coveted coach with a great relationship with Jared Goff and Dan Campbell is obviously not ideal. Especially after losing Ben Johnson, bringing Blough in as part of the offensive coaching staff would have benefitted Detroit. He would have been a good fit as QB coach in Detroit but Mark Brunell's job security doesn't seem to be in question for now.
