The Detroit Lions' injury-plagued season took yet another turn for the worse in Week 15, as Dan Campbell's squad saw several players go down against the Buffalo Bills. Chief among them was veteran running back David Montgomery, who's now out for the season after suffering a tear in his MCL.

Now the primary focus is on how Detroit replaces such an important cog in its offense. There's several notable names still available in free agency, and the Lions could poach a player from another team's practice squad as well to help fill that hole.

Surely Campbell and co. would like to add someone who has some familiarity with the Motor City, though, especially with there being little time to adjust being the playoffs.

As it turns out, one former Lions RB has commented on the possibility of a return in the wake of Montgomery's injury.

One Detroit fan reached out to running back and 2018 second-round pick Kerryon Johnson after the Montgomery news to see how the RB's knees are feeling. Johnson then responded with a link to a recent Pepsi add where several NFL stars of the past -- including Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Jerry Rice -- decide to unretire and get back on the field.

Now, this seems to be a clear joke from the once-electric playmaker. Struggles with the Lions, coupled with his previously mentioned knee troubles, prevented Johnson from a long NFL career. He ended up playing only four pro seasons, and his last NFL appearance came all the way back in 2021 for the San Francisco 49ers.

That being said, it's amazing to see Johnson wants to help out Detroit in a time of need. He'll likely just have to do that from afar, however, as the current Director of Player Development at the University of South Alabama is busy preparing for a busy winter in college football after the Lions went just 3-8 this year.

In the near-term, it appears Campbell's coaching staff is looking internally to fill the void left by Montgomery. He recently noted this is the moment stud young back Jahmyr Gibbs has been prepared for since the team drafted him. Backups Craig Reynolds and rookie Sione Vaki were also mentioned as players who could pick up the slack.

It'd be no surprise if the Lions do bring in someone a bit more accomplished than Reynolds and Vaki just to fortify the depth behind Gibbs heading into the postseason, but just don't expect that to be Johnson.
