Sam LaPorta’s contract has been the topic of conversation all week after he appeared on Barstool’s Pardon My Take and voiced his frustration with ongoing negotiations.
LaPorta was open and honest in his podcast appearance, saying that he wants to get a deal done, but it’s tough when he thinks that he’s worth as much as the best in the league.
And he’s not wrong.
It still caused some commotion among the fanbase, and Dan Campbell was even asked about it. He said that it’s not a distraction, but the media is making it one.
On Friday, LaPorta finally spoke to the media for the first time since the podcast episode aired, and he cleared the air on a few things, but said that he doesn’t regret saying what he did. He feels bad that it’s become a distraction, but he was honest about how he felt and said that he wants to play for Detroit.
#Lions TE Sam LaPorta said he wants to be a Lion and feels bad about the distraction his comments caused but doesn’t necessarily regret them.

LaPorta shouldn’t have had to clear the air because he said what every athlete is thinking during intense negotiations. He wants to be compensated fairly, and if he’s not, someone else will pay him. It’s that simple. And if that does happen, he’ll be just fine.
The only thing he’s asking for is some stability. LaPorta and his wife are about to welcome their first child, and it’s a big deal to him that it’s happening in Detroit. He just wants to make sure that his family is well taken care of with a long-term deal that will make both sides happy. LaPorta obviously doesn’t want to leave, but it’s going to be up to his agent and the organization to get a deal done.
What a great response from a true professional. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and he’s been open throughout the entire process.
Some people might not like how blunt he is, but I’ll take a genuine athlete over one who just says what we want to hear all the time.
Sam LaPorta wants to be a Lion
If you sift through all the realness in his words, you’d realize that LaPorta wants to remain a Lion. He may come off a little blunt, as he did on that podcast, but all he’s saying is that he wants to remain in Detroit and get a deal done; if the two sides can’t agree, both will be just fine, and the world will keep on spinning.
LaPorta hasn’t expressed any desire to leave Detroit, and people need to stop acting like he’s on his way out or leaning that way because he’s said the exact opposite.
Detroit wants him to remain a Lion, too. He is the fifth-best receiving tight end in the NFL this season with 316 yards and three touchdowns on 27 catches. LaPorta is playing like one of the best tight ends in football because that’s what he is, and he deserves to get paid like one.
Nothing LaPorta said was wrong, but people always find a way to twist things in order to start a controversy that’s not there.
