The Detroit Lions still have some deals to get done before Week 1. Star tight end Sam LaPorta is eligible for an extension, but coming off a delicate back injury, they may need to see a bit more before feeling comfortable giving him the big bucks.
That's why this training camp was so crucial for the former second-round pick to prove that he didn't miss a beat after such a long layoff. And, judging by his latest comments, it looks like he's ready to pad up and play tomorrow if that's what it takes.
Speaking to the media, LaPorta opened up about the emotional journey back to the field. More importantly, he confirmed that he will be out there on the field with no limitations for the remainder of training camp:
"Lions TE Sam LaPorta confirmed he is full go as camp begins, and will be in pads. LaPorta said he had an emotional road back from his back injury. He has had 3-4 solid months, he said. It took a while to get the strength back through his body once his nerve healed," reported Brad Galli.

One could make a case for the Lions having the most stacked set of skill players in the league. As such, it's easy to get caught up in the names and think that they might do just fine whenever one of their stars is absent.
That's unfair and doesn't reflect LaPorta's true impact on the team. In fact, the Lions have a 32-10 record when he plays and a 4-5 mark when he doesn't. While it might not necessarily be just a product of his absence, he's clearly a major factor in this offense.
LaPorta will now play for a tight end guru, so this might be his biggest season yet. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing worked wonders with Trey McBride, and while the Arizona Cardinals don't have as many weapons as Dan Campbell's team, LaPorta has already shown what he can do when he's heavily involved in the passing game.
Back injuries are complex, and LaPorta reportedly even feared he may never be able to suit up again. That should be a stern reminder on every route he runs or every time he blocks for a teammate: never to take this beautiful game for granted.
Of course, fetching a big payday should also be more than enough motivation for him to be at his best in training camp. But as much as money keeps making the world — and this industry — go round, it's not everything that drives the players.
Sam LaPorta has now experienced life with and without football, and he'll cherish every moment of his career like never before. It was unfortunate that this had to happen, but it might be a breaking point in his career.
While his numbers might not pop up as much as others' because of the Lions' overcrowded pass-catchers corps, LaPorta is a true star. His return is a massive boost for a team with no margin for error in 2026, and it should be just a matter of time before he gets a new deal.
