One of the more surprising stories of the Detroit Lions' 2026 offseason was the breakdown in negotiations and divorce with tackle Taylor Decker. There was still reason to wonder whether the two sides could find their way back together in free agency, with Decker appearing to generate limited interest after his release. However, Detroit's decision to draft Clemson tackle Blake Miller in this year's first round officially puts to bed any thoughts of a reunion.

The Lions have turned the page, and Decker remains in free agency searching for a new landing spot. It is a bit surprising to see the veteran struggling to find a new team, given his past production. In the 2025 season, Decker played 551 snaps of pass protection, allowing only two sacks. While Decker's pressure number sat at 33, which perhaps explains the tackle remaining in free agency, it is still a bit of a surprise.

Decker's career has proven that the lineman is capable of stepping into a starting lineup and contributing at a capable level. Considering the lack of depth at tackle throughout the league, it would seem Decker would have an easier time moving on after Detroit.

For the Lions, the franchise doesn't have the salary space or roster spot to consider any reunion. Even a bargain deal wouldn't make sense after drafting Miller and signing Larry Borom in free agency. The position is clearly filled, leaving Decker's next landing spot as a clear question mark.

Former Lions Right Tackle Taylor Decker Continues to Struggle to Find Next Landing Spot

Looking around the league, it is fair to wonder if the Carolina Panthers could make sense, as their offensive line would clearly benefit from veteran leadership. It is difficult to see any other clear landing spot, as the majority of the league has already restocked either in the draft or free agency over the last few weeks of the offseason.

This could leave Decker available in free agency for some time, waiting on a camp or preseason injury to provide an opportunity. If the lineman prefers to play for a contender, this is likely the best remaining path, as there isn't an obvious open spot on a team expected to be contending for anything of note.

Camp injuries are inevitable and provide opportunities to aging players, and it appears that the former Lion has been reduced to relying on this inevitability. For the Lions, it is hard not to pay attention to Decker and keep an eye on the veteran's career, no matter his landing spot. The lineman meant a lot to the franchise, but was no longer on the same page with the organization and remains on the hunt for another opportunity.
