There were several reasons to be excited about the Detroit Lions this season and one of them was the progress of second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold. The Lions first-round pick in 2024, Arnold didn’t have the best rookie season but the hype for Year 2 began to build as he learned under the wing of free agent addition D.J. Reed.

With a veteran mentor in his corner, Arnold had big expectations coming into the year. But he had struggled in his first two games and had some wondering if the bar was set too high. On Monday night, that bar proved to be more than just an arm’s length and a disastrous performance against the Baltimore Ravens may have officially put his breakout season on pause despite a 38-31 victory.

Terrion Arnold a Disappointment in Lions Win Over Ravens

The Lions’ defense had a tough task going up against a Ravens offense that racked up 81 points in its first two games. Trying to stop Lamar Jackson would have been enough to keep defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard up at night but Arnold’s performance was enough to give him nightmares, allowing three catches for 47 yards on five targets in Monday night’s win according to Pro Football Focus.

Arnold also gave up a touchdown to Rashod Bateman late in the second quarter where he was nowhere near the veteran receiver, turning a 14-7 advantage into a 14-14 tie going into halftime.

The performance was another disappointing chapter in Arnold’s second year and has left a big hole in the Lions’ defense moving forward. The Alabama product allowed 60 catches for 792 yards and four touchdowns with nine pass breakups in his rookie season but he also committed 10 penalties which was tied for eighth among all corners according to Pro Football Focus.

The offseason had many optimistic that Arnold would take a leap, but that hasn’t happened, allowing 13 catches for 221 yards, two touchdowns and a pass breakup on 20 targets through the first three games. Arnold also drew the ire of defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard for staying in the game after getting injured during the season opener against the Green Bay Packers and it’s possible that has had some residual effects as Arnold has struggled to find his footing this season.

The Lions need Arnold to figure it out and fulfill his projections for this season if they want to become a top defense. If not, Detroit could be looking for a replacement soon and with the Lions aiming for a title, it could come as soon as this year’s trade deadline.
