The 2025 MLB trade deadline is on Thursday, giving the Detroit Tigers only a few days to bolster their lineup for a potential World Series push. Much like other championship contenders, the Tigers have been linked to a few names ahead of the deadline, with one of the more prominent ones being Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez.

The Tigers need an upgrade at 3B, and with the Diamondbacks being five games under contract and Suarez on an expiring contract, he's the perfect rental option for manager A.J. Hinch & Co. In fact, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Monday that Detroit "would love to finalize a deal" for the All-Star slugger before Arizona leaves town after Wednesday's series finale.

Any potential trade talks appeared to be in jeopardy, though, when Tigers reliever Will Vest hit Suarez's right hand with a 96 mph fastball in the ninth inning of Monday's 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks. It would be extremely ironic if Detroit's hurler was the reason the front office could no longer pursue a reunion with the Arizona 3B.

Fortunately, it looks like a potential trade is still on the menu.

Former Tigers 3B Eugenio Suarez's X-rays on Hands Come Back Negative

Following Monday's series opener, Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold reported that Suarez seems to have avoided the worst. The Arizona 3B's "X-rays came back negative," and there is "no fracture" in his right hand; however, more testing will likely be done on Tuesday to get the full scope of the situation.

With Suarez's X-rays coming back negative, it'll be interesting to see if the Tigers let their former infielder leave the Motor City. It isn't often that a team's top trade target is in town days after the deadline, and it'd be in the Detroit front office's best interest to capitalize on this opportunity.

Signed as an amateur free agent in 2008, Suarez eventually made his Tigers debut during the 2014 season, slashing .242/.316/.336 with four home runs, 23 RBIs, and 22 walks in 85 games. That was all the action he'd see with the club, as the Tigers traded him and pitcher Jonathon Crawford to the Cincinnati Reds for veteran hurler Alfredo Simon before the 2015 season began.

Since exiting the Motor City, Suarez has played 1,491 games across stints with the Diamondbacks, Reds, and Seattle Mariners. He's amassed 308 HRs, 895 RBIs, 593 walks, a 25.8 WAR, and a .249/.331/.471 slash line during that stretch. The 2025 season is his second All-Star campaign during that stretch, as he currently boasts an MLB-leading 87 RBIs, along with 36 HRs, 29 walks, and the second-best OPS (.898) of his career.

The Tigers already made their first trade of the week by acquiring pitchers Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak from the Minnesota Twins on Monday afternoon. Whether or not they follow that up with a blockbuster to acquire Suarez remains to be seen, but a potential trade sure seems likelier on Tuesday than it did the night before.

The 2025 MLB trade deadline will go into effect on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
