Tigers Rival Ruins Detroit's Perfect Opportunity to Bolster Pitching Depth

Another AL Central team just acquired a starting pitcher who could have helped the Tigers, given their most recent injury.

The Detroit Tigers received some unfortunate news this week, as it was announced that rookie starting pitcher Jackson Jobe will miss the rest of the 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery.

It wasn’t the news that Detroit wanted to hear, given the success they are having this season, and already missing a couple of other pitchers due to injury (Alex Cobb and Reese Olson). With Jobe on the shelf for the foreseeable future, the Tigers now have to think about maybe adding a starter at the deadline.

However, that opportunity presented itself earlier than expected, as it was reported that veteran starting pitcher Aaron Civale asked to be traded by the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this week. Civale has dealt with an injury of his own this season (hamstring strain) but has pitched well in his last four starts (3.32 ERA).

On paper, the 30-year-old Civale would be a good addition to the backend of the rotation behind Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize.

Unfortunately, the veteran pitcher will not be making his way to Detroit, as another team in the AL Central has acquired his services.

MLB News: White Sox Acquire Aaron Civale From Brewers

On Friday, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported that the Chicago White Sox traded first baseman Andrew Vaughn to the Milwaukee Brewers for Civale.

If you are a Tigers fan, it would’ve been nice to see Detroit go after Civale. However, the White Sox starting rotation is not the best. They have an ERA of 4.04, which is ranked 17th in the majors and eighth in the American League.

Meanwhile, Detroit’s starting rotation has the second-best ERA in all of baseball (3.03) and tops in the American League. It’s been one of the main reasons why the Tigers are off to a hot start and could make a deep run in the postseason.

With Civale on his way to Chicago, the Tigers should still have several starting pitching options they can go after ahead of the trade deadline next month, depending on what happens across the rest of the league.
