The Detroit Tigers' first half is officially over with the All-Star break arriving and giving Detroit fans a breather from what has been an incredible season. Watching the Tigers establish themselves as one of the best teams in baseball has been thrilling for a fan base that is long overdue for an exciting season.

Still, the Detroit front office isn't falling into the trap of becoming content, actively looking for ways to improve a great roster. One more recent move that fits this description is the signing of veteran reliever Geoff Hartlieb to a minor league deal.

Adding potential bullpen options makes sense, considering that is arguably the team's weakness come the postseason. A lack of proven depth hasn't held the Tigers back so far this season, but it could become an issue when the games matter most. With this in mind, exploring every avenue for possible improvement is a wise decision. While Hartlieb is unlikely to crack the team's roster, it is a cheap move that gives the team a chance at finding a surprise option.

The Tigers Stole Geoff Hartlieb From Top AL Contender

The veteran has experience at the Major League level, having pitched in part of six seasons with different teams. While the production hasn't been reliable, having this experience in your minor league system is a plus. It doesn't hurt either that the Tigers were able to steal the reliever from the New York Yankees. Thought to be one of the teams standing in Detroit's way in a potential postseason run, stealing even a minor league player from the team is a fun decision.

Hartlieb was so frustrated with the Yankees' decision to demote him that he rejected the assignment in favor of free agency. Quitting New York in favor of landing with another contender on a minor league deal. Perhaps Hartlieb simply wanted a fresh start, but it is odd to reject a minor league assignment for one contender only to sign with another in the same situation.

Regardless, it is a solid move for the Tigers and gives the franchise a chance to find surprise depth. Hartlieb isn't going to be throwing any high-leverage innings but could still have value if injuries strike or the Tigers need another option at the back of the bullpen.
