The 2025 MLB season is flying by as the calendar has officially hit the mid-June mark. This year's All-Star break is less than a month away followed by the rapidly approaching trade deadline, which could see the Detroit Tigers bring in some reinforcements as they chase their first World Series title in 40 years.
With just over a month to go before the deadline, the Tigers must figure out a plan of attack before another club pounces on some of the top available names. They have already lost a potential target when the Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
When it comes to potential trade deadline targets, one MLB analyst is encouraging the Tigers to reunite with a familiar infield face.
Tigers Encouraged to Reunite With 3B Eugenio Suarez at Trade Deadline
The Athletic's Jim Bowden recently published a story regarding the latest buzz he's hearing before the trade deadline. When discussing Detroit's outlook, the MLB reporter encouraged manager A.J. Hinch's squad to reunite with Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
"(The Tigers will) be aggressive at the trade deadline to bolster their bullpen and lengthen their lineup, with a power-hitting third baseman being their biggest need," Bowden wrote. "A reunion with the Diamondbacks’ Suarez could be the best fit."
With a 36-35 record through 71 games, a playoff experience is far from guaranteed for the Diamondbacks. They could be looking to get rid of some expiring contracts before the deadline, which is why Suarez — who will become a free agent this winter — is one of their top trade candidates in the coming weeks.
World Series-contending teams are always looking to add another dynamic bat, and Suarez certainly fits the bill if the Tigers want to venture down that route. The fact that he's on an expiring contract means Detroit likely won't have to overpay for his services.
Suarez has been one of the most productive third basemen throughout his time in the Majors. The former All-Star infielder has racked up 297 home runs, 888 RBIs, and 607 walks in 1,542 career outings, making him the type of veteran that buyers love to add at the deadline ahead of a playoff push.
As usual, Suarez is having another productive season with the D-backs. The Venezuelan slugger is slashing .233/.307/.527 with 21 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 21 walks in 71 games. If he maintains his current trajectory, he'll be on pace for the fourth 30-HR/100-RBI campaign of his career.
Suarez joined the Tigers as an amateur free agent in 2008 before working his way up the ranks and making his MLB debut just over five years later. His time in the Motor City was brief, though, as Suarez was traded to the Cincinnati Reds following the 2014 season. He spent seven seasons with the Reds and another pair with the Seattle Mariners before being traded to Arizona in November 2023.
Reuniting with Suarez over a decade after his departure is something that should be on the Tigers' radar. Not only would it add a five-time 30-HR hitter to Hinch's lineup, but it'd also give Detroit fans a chance to see what Suarez could've accomplished had he not been traded almost 11 years ago.
