The Detroit Red Wings return home tonight after a grueling seven game road trip. The Red Wings come into tonight losers of three straight games.

What a difference a week makes for the Detroit Red Wings. Last Thursday, the Red Wings beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-0 in what I thought was the best game of the year the Red Wings played.

Since then, the Red Wings have lost three straight games including a 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday.

The Red Wings led 2-1 after the first period but in the second period things went south. After tying the game early in the second, the Stars took the lead with about five minutes left in the period. One minute later, Jonathan Ericsson redirected the puck into his own net and that extended the Stars lead to 4-2.

Antti Niemi was fantastic as he arguably won the game for them. He stopped 16 shots in the third period alone. Former Red Wing Patrick Eaves iced the game with a empty net goal and the Stars won 5-2.

Now the Red Wings head back to Joe Louis Arena in big trouble. Of 14 possible points on this road trip the Red Wings only got six points, going 2-3-2. Tonight the Penguins come to town having lost two straight but are well ahead of the Red Wings in the playoff race. These next three games are a test for the Red Wings. They face the Penguins tonight, Montreal on Monday and Boston on Wednesday.

Gustav Nyquist said the Red Wings have to be sharp at home and they do. This season the Red Wings are 7-10-3 at home and in December they won only one home game.

With the Red Wings eight points back of Ottawa for third in the Atlantic, it’s safe to think that things need to turn around pretty quickly for them.
