The Detroit Red Wings face the Montreal Canadiens today at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings are coming off a thrilling 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Detroit Red Wings got a huge win on Saturday night against one of the top teams in the NHL. The Red Wings won 6-3 against the Penguins and it was a much needed win.

Kris Letang got the scoring started for the Penguins 27 seconds into the game and that was how the first period ended. Evgeni Malkin made it 2-0 early in the second. Gustav Nyquist would get the Red Wings on the board and just four minutes later Thomas Vanek would tie the game.

Matt Cullen would give the Penguins the lead again but Frans Nielsen would tie the game again a minute later. The game would go into the third period tied at three. Just under two minutes into the third and Andreas Athanasiou would give the Red Wings the lead.

Athanasiou would score one of the best goals of the season in the entire NHL. He went coast to coast and got the crowd going. Mike Green and Henrik Zetterberg would add goals for the Red Wings and they ended up beating the Pens 6-3.

Since Athanasiou got benched two weeks ago, he has been on a tear. He has scored four goals in five games and he’s showing that he needs to be in the lineup every game.

Something to make Red Wing fans happy is that Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha are all under 23-years old. That’s why I’m excited for the offensive future of this team.

Today, the Red Wings welcome Montreal to town. It’s a rare weekday afternoon game. After a big win on Saturday, can the Red Wings keep the momentum going?

The Canadiens are the best team in the Atlantic while the Red Wings are six points out of third. The Red Wings are winless against the Canadiens this season but the last loss was a heartbreaker in overtime.

As of this writing, no starter has been announced but Jared Coreau has played better than Petr Mrazek and I think he should get the start today. Here is all the important information for tonight’s game:
