The Detroit Red Wings face the Buffalo Sabres tonight at the Joe as they look to win their third straight game. Buffalo is coming off a shootout win.

The Detroit Red Wings smoked the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday afternoon 5-1. The Red Wings led 1-0 after the second period and then exploded in the third.

After the Avalanche tied the game early in the third, the Red Wings responded in a very big way. They would score four straight goals in the third to beat the Avs. Tomas Tatar scored two of those goals just 1:36 apart. Jimmy Howard was very good again for the Red Wings as he stopped 23 of the 24 Avalanche shots.

Now the Red Wings welcome the Buffalo Sabres to the Joe. The Red Wings are looking for their third straight win.

Unfortunately though the Red Wings shouldn’t be winning. The best thing for their future is getting a top three pick. Right now the Red Wings have the sixth-fewest points in the league which normally wouldn’t be a bad thing.

This is a year that finishing with the sixth-fewest points could hurt the Red Wings. Remember the Vegas Golden Knights are guaranteed to pick no lower than sixth in the draft. So most likely, the Red Wings have to finish between the third- and fifth-fewest points in the league to have a shot at that top three pick.

Tonight the Red Wings welcome the Sabres to the Joe for the final time. The Sabres have beaten the Red Wings two of the three games this season. Jimmy Howard should get the start tonight, as he has returned to his early season form since returning from injury.
