Michigan Wolverines agree to renew ‘rivalry’ with Texas Longhorns in 2024
By Joel Greer

The two iconic football programs will meet at the Big House in 2024 then repeat the fun at Texas three years later.
“A match-up of this magnitude doesn’t come along all that often, and when it does its special for both programs and the great fans that support each institution,” U-M head coach Brady Hoke said in a prepared statement. “This also is a special series for all fans of college football, and I anticipate great games just like the first contest played between the two programs.”
Rose Bowl excitement
In addition to Texas, Michigan has already added Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma, UCLA and Virginia Tech to future schedules—partially to fill the void caused by Notre Dame’s unpopular exit.
Surprisingly, the Wolverines and Longhorns have met previously on only one occasion, that being a 38-37 last-second Texas victory in the 2005 Rose Bowl.
The field that day was loaded with future NFL stars.
The two quarterbacks, Michigan freshman Chad Henne, and Texas quarterback Vince Young were sensational.
The kickers decide it
Henne, then a true freshman, threw three touchdown passes to Braylon Edwards and Young ran for touchdowns of 20, 60, 10 and 23 yards. Young, who led Texas to a national title the follow year, was named the game’s top offensive player, while Michigan’s LaMarr Woodley won the top defensive player award.
Ironically, the outcome was decided by a pair of field goal kickers.
Wolverine Garrett Rivas‘ third field goal of the day gave Michigan a 37-35 lead with with 3:04 remaining, but that left plenty of time for Young to execute the final drive, setting the stage for Dusty Mangrum’s 37-yard field goal as time ran out.
Currently, Michigan leads the nation in all-time wins with 912, while Texas is third with 876.
