Jim Harbaugh assembling his first coaching staff, Durkin, Drevno official

When Jim Harbaugh took the  job least month, Michigan had only six players committed to the 2015 recruiting class.

That leaves Michigan with 10 more players to land before Signing Day (February 4) arrives.

More from Michigan Wolverines

Being that the 2015 class is a small one (16), filling those slots should be no trouble for Harbaugh and his assistants to handle.

And Harbaugh is building his staff as we speak:

While not all these names are official, enough sources have reported them to be accepted as nearly-done deals.

Defensive Coordinator, D.J Durkin: Worked with Harbaugh at Stanford (2007-09) before moving on to Florida where he was the DC, before becoming the interim head coach when head coach Will Muschamp resigned after the 2014 regular season. Durkin’s Gators knocked off East Carolina 28-20 in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl. Because of his recruiting success, he was named 2012 Rivals.com Recruiter of the Year.

“Reuniting with Jim at the University of Michigan is an opportunity that I could not pass up,” Durkin said in a released statement Thursday morning (Jan 8). “We had some great times working together at Stanford, and I look forward to producing great results at Michigan.(scout.com) (Official)

Offensive coordinator, Tim Trevno: Worked with Harbaugh at the University of San Diego, (OC/OL), Stanford (TE/OL) and NFL San Francisco 49ers (OL). While at San Diego, Trevno helped the Toreros to a pair of NCAA Div. I-AA titles.

He also helped the 49ers make an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII, where both Harbaugh brothers (Jim and John) coached against each other. (John was the winner, 34-31).

“I am excited to join the University of Michigan and work with Coach Harbaugh again,” Drevno said in a U-M release. “We have a long history together, and I have great respect for what he has accomplished as a coach. I am excited to be in Ann Arbor and can’t wait to get to work with the players and staff to build on this program’s great tradition.” (Official).

Defensive Line, Greg Mattison: A holdover from Brady Hoke’s staff, Mattison takes a step down from DC to DL, but the veteran coach will be front and center when it comes to recruiting. And what better recommendation can you get than from Urban Meyer, called by many the top recruiter in the nation.

“We lived next to each other at Notre Dame for a long time,” Meyer told a group of reporters in Columbus. “I know he’s a great recruiter. We recruited together for many, many years. I’ve just got a lot of respect for him as a coach.” Meyer and his Buckeyes will battle Oregon for the NCAA championship Monday night in Dallas.

Mattison, Harbaugh and the remainder of Michigan’s staff will be working on a recruiting strategy that will make Michigan a Big Ten title contender in the very near future. (Per Sports Illustrated)

Offensive Backs: Tyrone Wheatley: An outstanding Michigan tailback from 1991-94 and no doubt will be a fan favorite. Wheatley is third on Michigan’s all-time career list for both rushing yards (4,178) and yards-per-carry (6.07).

Wheatley played 10 years in the NFL, four for the Giants and six with the Raiders. He rushed for over 100 yards eight times in his NFL career, and finished with 4,967 yards.

It took Wheatley only seven years to move up the ranks from a high school coach (Dearborn Heights Robichaud) to the NFL Buffalo Bills. (likely)
