On the first day of the 2014 Free Agency period the Pistons locked up Jodie Meeks to a 3 year, $19 million contract. After it was all said and done Meeks was the premier guy the Pistons got in free agency.

  • Except it was met with scrutiny and criticism right off the bat. Experts called the signing an overpay by a large margin and wouldn’t be worth it for the Pistons come the NBA season.

Meeks had a career season in the 2013-2014 NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 15.7 PPG on 46.3% FG%. The most impressive part was his 40.1% 3pt% as President/Head Coach Stan Van Gundy was obviously looking for some 3 point shooting.

With the way he started off the 2014-2015 NBA season with a back injury things didn’t seem to go too well.

When he came back from injury the Pistons did have a quick 2-game winning streak. But they would only see it disappear as they struggled with the lasting effects of Josh Smith on the squad.

While unloading Smith has done wonders for this current team the effect of Meeks on the Pistons should not be ignored. The strengths he brings to the team is one they needed on the offensive side of the ball.

Coming off the bench and taking shots away from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has also been huge. Before Caldwell-Pope would press the issue taking far too many shots. Now he can play within his strengths and be a solid defensive player.

As a sixth man coming off the bench Meeks gives the Pistons the scoring threat they once lacked. He’s also looked like a bargain in the process. With the Pistons playing so well Meeks will continue his solid play for a playoff contender.

All while proving the critics wrong.
