By Joel Greer
National Signing Day winds down
Like John Beilein’s success with legacy recruits, the situation is happening throughout the Michigan football team.

Just as fathers became confident with Brady Hoke, they’re more than happy to send their sons to play for new coach Jim Harbaugh.
For any longtime fan of the Wolverines, the names of Tyrone Wheatley, Tony Gant, Jon Runyan, John Wangler and Craig Dunaway should be familiar. All four starred for the Wolverines several years ago.
More Legacy Commits
Today (Feb. 4), Michigan landed a pair of can’t-miss legacy commits.
TE/DE Tyrone Wheatley, Jr signed his letter of intent today as did OT Jon Runyan.
The rest have been through the recruiting struggle before. LB Jared Wangler will be a redshirt freshman, brother WR Jack Wangler will be a redshirt sophomore and LB Allen Gant will play his redshirt junior season.
DE Jack Dunaway will begin his Michigan career as a preferred walk-on.
Coaches in the act
The father and son subject doesn’t end here. Head coach Jim Harbaugh’s son Jay will be coaching the tight ends and special teams.
It’s possible both Whitleys will be on the same side of the ball. Senior will be coaching the running backs while 6-6, 260-pound Junior will either play tight end or, if it’s up to senior, he will play defensive end.
Runyan, Jr. is following his dad’s footsteps at offensive tackle, but better bulk up some, since he’s still 60 pounds shy of his dad’s playing weight.
Wangler to Carter
Tony Gant played safety for Michigan in the 1980’s while John Wangler quarterbacked the Wolverines from 1977-80.
His most memorable moment came in 1979 when his game-ending 45-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Carter in the Indiana game led Michigan’s famed radio announcer, Bob Ufer, to exclaim, “John Wangler to Anthony Carter will be heard until another 100 years of Michigan football is played!”
Michigan finished with 14 recruits (see chart below) in the 2015 class but might add Roquan Smith, a 4-star linebacker who decommitted from UCLA earlier today.
Marshall, Weber, Clark
Smith made the decision because his position coach Jeff Ulbrich is headed to the NFL Atlanta Falcons.
As of this afternoon, Smith was favoring Georgia and UCLA, but was still on Harbaugh’s list. Commits can sign LOIs until the first of April.
Michigan lost potential stars Iman Marshall, Michael Weber and Chris Clark but finished the day ranked 38th by 247 sports, up 33 positions from Tuesday.
