This week seemed to be one of the busiest weeks in the state of Michigan when it came to sports. However it wasn’t the professional teams that made the top news, it was the colleges of the state that grabbed the spotlight. National Signing Day was this Wednesday and every college signed big named kids. So here is a look at some of the big stories from the week in the Detroit sports Friday Flash.

Harbaugh settling in at Michigan with recruiting
One thing many people were interested in seeing was how new Michigan Football coach Jim Harbaugh would handle National Signing Day. Most had the idea that the big named coach would serve them well for getting big named players.
Whether he was swiping players from in-conference teams, or signing other big name players, it seems that Harbaugh is settling in nicely at Michigan and fans are happy with the work that he and his team has put in to the upcoming season.
Michigan State not only looking at 2015 but also 2016
Michigan State Football was working on their 2015 class all this week but they also had eyes on the further future. The team got the 24th ranked defensive end in the nation Khalid Kareem as a recruit for the 2016 signing class. He was at the MSU-Michigan basketball game that the Spartans won and decided to commit to the school.

But if you don’t want to look at the farther future of the team, they did sign young talent with the 2015 signing class. The recent and over time success has made recruiting for the Spartans much easier and the team is happy with their signing class of 2015.
Western’s coach Fleck loves to recruit
Coming into the National Signing Day, Western Michigan Football was ranked 1st in the MAC and 70th in the country when it came to their 2015 signing class. The main reason? Probably 99.5 percent due in part to the now three-year coach P.J. Fleck. Fleck said that recruiting is one of the best parts of his job, he loves getting players to buy into his plan and then work out that plan.
Western Michigan Football stayed close to home when it came to their 2015 signing class. 80% of their signing class lived within a 6 hour radius of the campus. You could tell that many players had bought into Fleck as a coach and a mentor. Many players tweeted their excitement about the chance to play at Western for Fleck.
If you’re not super into college’s National Signing Day here are some Detroit sports professional team headlines.
Tigers Martinez has torn meniscus
Only two weeks before pitchers and catchers are supposed to report for the start of Spring Training, the Detroit Tigers had a semi quiet off-season. The team lost out on Max Scherzer to the Washington Nationals, but picked up Yoenis Cespedes from the Red Sox. They also picked up a two arms for the rotation and it seemed like this team was ready to go into Spring Training all well and good.
Then news broke on Thursday that DH Victor Martinez had torn his left medial meniscus. The team said that Martinez is scheduled to have surgery next week on Tuesday. There is also no timetable for the DH’s return. The meniscus tear happened in his same knee that he tore his ACL in back in 2012.
