Detroit Tigers Trade Rumors: David Price Decision to Come Next Week

facebooktwitterreddit

The Detroit Tigers buy-or-sell roller coaster keeps gliding along as the team hover around the .500 mark. Moving a few games in either direction before the July 31 trade deadline passes could cause the Tigers to take vastly different paths as they head into the stretch run.

Dave Dombrowski has admitted that the team could look to sell at the deadline if they’re out of contention, but has always maintained that their hope is still to try to win this year.

The biggest name to hit the block — should the team decide to act as sellers — would be starting pitcher David Price. We hear earlier today that the Cubs have already inquired on his availablilty, and now we learn that the Dodgers would covet the ace lefty as well.

But, buy or sell, the decision is not going to be made just yet, as Nightengale mentions in the above tweet. The Tigers are taking the wait-and-see approach in the lead up to the deadline.

James Schmehl of MLive had previously reported that the Tigers are planning a meeting of front office members while the team is in Tampa next week.

"Tigers officials are expected to meet Monday in Tampa to discuss the state of the team, where they will ultimately decide whether the team should buy or sell."

If the Tigers do make Price available, expect him to draw plenty of interest as the top name on the market. Jason Beck of MLB.com noted a large number of scouts in attendance for Thursday afternoon’s game.

The Oakland Athletics traded left-handed starter Scott Kazmir to the Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon for minor leaguers Daniel Mengden (RHP) and Scott Nottingham (C). Both prospects were ranked right around #20 in the Astros system, according to MLB.com.

Kazmir is projected to be worth about 1.0 WAR for the rest of the season while Price would be projected to be worth about 2.0 WAR, so the Tigers should be able to get a little bit better package if they decide to trade their ace. Kazmir and Price are both due to hit free agency at the end of the season.

We’ll have to wait and see what the Tigers’ record is like after the upcoming weekend series in Boston.
