Michigan Football: Three Takeaways from Media Day

“How much milk do I have to drink to become a quarterback?” a young boy asked a spotlighted Jim Harbaugh during Michigan football media day. Harbaugh, among other coaches, answered a handful of questions regarding Michigan football’s long awaited 2015 campaign.

The coaching helm spent the day pointing out plenty of things we pretty much already knew, but left us empty-handed once more with the quarterback battle. Although, we weren’t able to figure out the elephant in the room, we did find out some key things about team 137.

Here’s are three takeaways from Thursday’s festivities:

More from Michigan Wolverines

Jabrill Peppers is Hungry

Everyone is talking about Jabrill Peppers. He hasn’t started a game, and only cracked a few plays in his shortened season last year, but nonetheless, he cracked ESPN’s top 100 college football players ranking #69 as a redshirt freshman.

When asked today about Michigan’s defense he mentioned in an interview with The Detroit News, “We have a new attitude.. A chip on our shoulder, this is Michigan.” Peppers went on to describe the defense as, “tenacious and hungry.”

Peppers’ passion was glowing in the locker room today. Because of that, now you can really see why people are betting on the freshman to be among the nation’s top players. Peppers also went on to mention Michigan’s possible use of three safeties. He noted the fact that himself, Jarrod Wilson, and Delano Hill would thrive off of all being out there at once. Everyone’s excited to see this kid perform, but I think he’s most excited to win, and mainly play football.

Shane Morris is Betting on Himself

“I’m approaching this as it’s my job to lose,” junior QB Shane Morris proclaimed to mgoblue.com. Since Iowa transfer Jake Rudock announced his transfer to Michigan, Shane Morris has had a certain confidence to him. Morris has pointed out that people expected Rudock to transfer in and take his job, but he has on numerous occasions, including today, said that he is basically not giving his job up without a fight.

Today, Shane confidently stated he believes he could be the quarterback of this team. Shane went onto explain his over excitement for camp, and repeated the word ‘competition’ when it comes to his battle with Jake Rudock. Whether or not Shane ultimately wins this battle is yet to be seen, but it’s more than obvious that he wants it.

Ann Arbor will be Silent until Utah Game

“We’re going into a submarine tomorrow, and you won’t see us for a while,” mentioned the current Ann Arbor icon, Jim Harbaugh. Michigan has been all over the media all offseason, as expected.

Harbaugh has covered Sports Illustrated twice, ESPN magazine, and had a three-page feature in Lindy’s Sports annual college football preview issue. ”You won’t hear from us or see us. We’re going to be working, we’re going to be in a bunker mentality until we decide we’re not, until we decide to come up to the surface.” said Harbaugh, once again reassuring the media he won’t be talking to them for a while.

While Michigan could “come up to the surface” tomorrow, and Harbaugh could host an hour-long presser then; I wouldn’t bet on a real presser until after a win/loss against Utah. Harbaugh controlled the offseason, but he knows how to coach, and he knows that now’s the time to do just that.
