With Jim Harbaugh’s arrival a year ago, the fullback position became more glamorous.

Last season alone, seniors Sione Houma and Joe Kerridge actually showed up on the statistics sheet.

Houma carried the ball 43 times (some from the tailback position) for 184 yards, while Kerridge ran the ball 14 times for 62 yards. In their previous three seasons, only Kerridge ran the ball and that was just four times.

Both fullbacks graduated so Harbaugh will be looking for someone to fill the void.

The only fullback returning with any game experience is Wyatt Shallman, but four carries in three seasons don’t add up to much.

So what about Kingston Davis, a 6-1, 242 lb prospect from Prattsville (Alabama) H.S.

Rated the nation’s No. 1 fullback candidate by 247sports (composite), Davis is also equipped to play tailback, and of course, single back in the read-option offense.

While Davis might have the best shot at starting at fullback, he will certainly get playing time this fall.

Odds against starting: 2 to 1
