Martin Mayhew made Bob Quinn’s first draft as general manager of the Detroit Lions more difficult when he dealt away a 2016 third round draft pick to draft defensive tackle in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The loss of that pick was eased by receiving a third round compensatory pick back for losing Ndamukong Suh in free agency, and an additional sixth round compensatory pick gave Quinn more to work with.
Lions fans hoping for another compensatory pick or two in the 2017 NFL Draft are going to be disappointed as the Lions are not projected to receive any next year. The cutoff date for which movement in free agency counts toward/against compensatory consideration has passed so the Lions are locked in as a team that added far more than they lost in free agency this offseason.
Over the Cap does a great job tracking free agent movement and projecting the resulting compensatory picks so you can check out their tracker to see the Lions had many more free agents come in to cancel out their losses.
Getting compensatory picks is all about losing more and better players in free agency and while the Lions loaded up on qualifying free agents, they didn’t have many qualifying players to even pin any hopes on receiving a comp pick in return.

In other news, defensive end Jason Jones is officially a former Lion now that he has signed with the Miami Dolphins on a one-year deal. There was no indication that a return was likely, especially considering his number 91 was assigned to rookie defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson, but that is officially no longer an option.
